Seminar: Albert Ali Salah – Mobile phone data analysis for migrant mobility
Large scale mobile phone data analysis for refugee and migrant mobility
Link to online seminar, see below.
Abstract:
Big data sources provide new ways of observing large scale human mobility. Social media traces, mobile phone records, application logs all include digital breadcrumbs people leave behind, and it is possible to collect and process these data points in a privacy-aware manner to gain quantitative insights. Data collaboratives are private-public collaborations, where a private partner shares some of its valuable data for social good, and this happens under very controlled conditions. In this talk, I will talk about how mobile phone data can be shared by private companies, and how it can be processed for mobility of migrants and refugees in areas such as social integration, education and health. I will describe the Data for Refugees and the more recent HumMingBird EU projects. I will also discuss the privacy and ethical aspects of such data sources, as well as more fundamental limitations of such big data approaches.
