Title: Can We Overcome Ethnic Discrimination?
Abstract:
This talk explores avenues to overcome ethnic discrimination. It draws on several empirical studies on ethnic discrimination in the housing and labor market, both field experiments and survey evidence. I argue both that we need to know much more about the nature of discrimination, but also that there are promising leads to reduce levels of discrimination. The centerpiece of this talk is a natural experiment examining the influence of celebrity behavior in reducing discrimination. To make headway in understanding ethnic discrimination, we need the ambition to move beyond description and develop creative methods to study discrimination and how to reduce it.
